Uncharacteristic Struggles for the Golden Knights

Over the past few weeks, the Golden Knights have experienced a series of events that can only be described as uncharacteristic. The team has lost seven of their last eight games, with a troubling trend of allowing a high number of goals without being able to respond effectively.

Taking out a 2-1 shootout loss to the New Jersey Devils on December 17, the Knights have conceded 30 goals in the last seven games. This includes a 4-3 loss to the St. Louis Blues, where they allowed four goals for the fourth consecutive game. Three of those goals were due to poor puck management, which has become a growing concern for the team.

“We gave them three, so it is a source of concern for me, and I hope it is for those guys,” said Knights coach Bruce Cassidy.

Goals and Their Causes

Cassidy has consistently emphasized the importance of puck management and minimizing giveaways. This recent stretch has not been an exception. If the Knights are to break their four-game losing streak against the Chicago Blackhawks, they must start by improving their decision-making on the ice.

Of the 30 goals given up, eight directly resulted from turnovers. Nine were due to failing to break out of their own zone, while five came from defensive breakdowns. Only four goals were scored on the power play against the 13th-best penalty-killing unit. Two goals came from deflections off sticks or another player, and two more came from shots from the point.

The winning goal by St. Louis’ captain Brayden Schenn was a prime example of the puck management issues that Cassidy has highlighted. Defenseman Noah Hanifin attempted to move the puck deep into the offensive zone, but all three forwards were already in position for the forecheck. However, Hanifin couldn’t get the puck off his stick to create a two-on-one situation. The puck then kicked off Schenn’s skate and into the net with just 1:33 remaining.

“We could’ve handled the puck better on the last goal,” Cassidy said. “Good decisions with the puck at crucial times is part of it.”

Being Certain in Decision-Making

Cassidy clarified that he wouldn’t describe the team’s approach as being conservative, but he wants the Knights to be more confident in their decision-making.

“You’ve got to be more sure if you’re going to put some risk into your game,” Cassidy said. “Simply because it seems like every time something happens that’s bad, it’s more to our team than the other team right now, so let’s try to control the variables better with our decisions with the puck.”

Defenseman Kaedan Korczak admitted that the Knights have been “finding ways to lose” and that simple mistakes are the main cause. Center Brett Howden added that the team is relying on “sticking together” and supporting each other through this difficult period.

“I think just moving forward here, doing everything it takes to win,” Howden said. “Just all the little plays. It’s little things in games where we’re not having to force a play and do what’s right for the team. We had a good day today and a good meeting, and feeling good going into tomorrow.”

Defensive Struggles and Team Morale

The Knights are tied with the Washington Capitals for the third-most goals allowed (4.29) since December 20. While fans may be looking for a silver lining, they are not alone in struggling defensively. Teams like Carolina, Washington, and Anaheim are also facing similar challenges.

“I’d be lying to you if I said all of us weren’t frustrated with the results,” said defenseman Zach Whitecloud. “We’re a team and an organization that’s committed to being consistent in terms of winning and playing well. When you’re not doing that, it can weigh on the group.

“Part of that is sticking with our culture and what we do here, and eventually, things will turn around.”

Upcoming Game Against the Blackhawks

The Golden Knights will face the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday at 4 p.m. at the United Center in Chicago. The game will be broadcast on KMCC-34, with radio coverage on KKGK-AM (1340) and KFLG-FM (94.7). The Knights are favored by -265, with a total of 5½.
