A Community Gathers to Honor Two Young Lives

In the small town of Oroville, California, a heartfelt gathering took place on Friday evening as friends and family came together to honor the lives of two young men who tragically lost their lives in a car accident. The event, held at the steps of the Oroville Convention Center, was a touching tribute to Carter Lyles, 17, and Santino Ramirez, 19, who passed away on January 25 near Dayton.

The vigil, which lasted over an hour, was not marked by grand speeches but rather by a quiet celebration of the two young men’s lives. More than 300 community members attended, sharing stories, expressing grief, and offering words of love and remembrance. One of the most poignant aspects of the event was the creation of two white wooden crosses, crafted by the Las Plumas Thunderbirds Youth Football and Cheer team. Attendees wrote heartfelt notes on the crosses, including phrases like “Brother it’s forever your world” and “My baby boy, we love you forever and a day.” Carmen Garcia, Santino’s grandmother, added her own message: “We miss you.” These personal touches highlighted the deep emotional connection many felt to the two young men.

Oroville resident Ricky Gabriel, who helped organize the event, shared his memories of Lyles and Ramirez. As a former coach in their junior high school football league, he knew both boys well. Gabriel described them as fun, loving, and happy kids. He noted that Santino had a smile that could light up a room, while Carter had a natural charisma that drew people to him.

“Both of them were fun, loving, happy kids. Santino had a smile that would light up the room, and Carter had lots of charisma, could draw a crowd and everybody loves him,” Gabriel said. “Their lives were taken way too soon.”

During the vigil, family members and friends embraced each other, allowing emotions to flow freely. A community care team from the Oroville Union High School District was also present to provide counseling and support for those in need.

As the vigil continued, someone set off aerial fireworks in front of the Municipal Center, drawing the attention of the attendees. Oroville Police Department officers were present throughout the event, ensuring the safety of all attendees. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Garcia, who sat beside the cross during the vigil, shared her feelings about the event. She referred to Ramirez as her “handsome grandson” and described him as a bright source of light in her life.

“And it just lit up right now,” she said after watching the fireworks.

Gabriel mentioned that the crosses created during the event will be taken to the crash site south of Chico, near Dayton Road and Owen Lane. This gesture serves as a lasting reminder of the community’s love and support for Lyles and Ramirez.
