A Dominant Performance by UConn

UConn’s men’s basketball team delivered a commanding performance against Creighton on Saturday night in Omaha, securing an 85-58 victory. The win extended their winning streak to 17 games and marked one of their most complete games of the season. Playing in a typically energetic environment at the CHI Center in Omaha, Nebraska, the Huskies (21-1, 11-0 Big East) showcased their dominance from the outset.

Braylon Mullins, who had missed the previous game due to a concussion, made an immediate impact upon his return. He hit a deep three-pointer for the Huskies’ first basket of the game. Solo Ball added two more three-pointers, and Mullins followed up with another long-range shot, giving UConn a 12-8 lead after starting the game with four made threes.

Creighton (12-10, 6-5 Big East) fought back, with Isaac Traudt hitting a three-pointer that gave them a one-point lead. However, Jaylin Stewart quickly answered with a tough bucket, halting the Bluejays’ only lead of the game. Although Creighton managed to stay close for much of the first half, UConn began to pull away after Tarris Reed Jr. slammed home a missed shot from Alex Karaban, putting the Huskies ahead 33-27 with just over two minutes left in the first half.

From that point on, it was all UConn. Ball hit another three-pointer, and while Creighton scored a pair of free throws, Silas Demary Jr. closed out the half with five consecutive points. By halftime, the Huskies led 41-30.

A Second Half Domination

The second half started with Creighton scoring first, but Mullins responded with another three-pointer, and a layup from Karaban extended the lead to 14 points — the largest of the night. For a team that has faced criticism for lacking a “killer instinct,” UConn turned up the intensity and ran the Bluejays out of their own building.

Led by Karaban, UConn launched a 10-0 run, with Karaban capping it off with a putback after missing a shot. At that point, the Huskies led 62-40. UConn’s defensive pressure proved too much for Creighton, which failed to mount a counterattack, going scoreless from the field for nearly seven minutes in the second half. By the time Jasen Green scored with 7:39 remaining, Creighton fans had already begun to leave as the Huskies led 69-45.

The Huskies stretched their lead to as much as 30 points in the second half after another three-pointer from Mullins, eventually cruising to a 27-point victory. Mullins led UConn with 16 points, shooting 4-8 from three. Karaban (15 points), Demary Jr. (15), and Solo Ball (11) also reached double figures.

Strong Offensive and Defensive Performance

UConn’s offensive efficiency was impressive throughout the game, as they shot 54.1 percent from the floor and 51.1 percent (16-31) from three-point range. This strong performance helped elevate UConn’s offensive efficiency ranking from 42nd to 31st nationally in KenPom.

Defensively, the Huskies were equally dominant. Creighton did not make a single three-pointer in the second half, despite taking 11 attempts. They shot just under 41 percent from the field. Nik Graves led all scorers with 17 points, while Blake Harper was the only other Bluejay in double figures with 11 points.

Team Effort and Rebounding

UConn imposed its will on the boards, outrebounding the Bluejays 37-24. They also out-hustled them with 23 second-chance points compared to Creighton’s eight. While Greg McDermott’s Creighton squad is not as talented as previous years, UConn delivered one of its most complete performances in recent memory, securing a convincing win on the road in a place that has historically been challenging for the program.
