ATLANTA — Caleb Wilson delivered a performance that left the local fans in awe, including a breathtaking dunk that seemed to defy gravity. It looked like he might fly out of the building.

The 6-foot-10 native of Atlanta put up an impressive showing, scoring 22 points and adding three more dunks to his already impressive tally, which leads the nation. His efforts helped No. 16 North Carolina dominate Georgia Tech with a final score of 91-75 on Saturday.

Wilson is expected to be one of the top picks in this summer’s NBA draft. The Atlanta Hawks, who are among the teams with early selections, could be a potential landing spot for him. They recently acquired a first-round pick from the New Orleans Pelicans through a trade.

“I would love to play for the Hawks,” Wilson said. “It would be nice to come back home and play for my hometown, but I’m just ready to make an impact wherever I end up.”

Despite the pressure, Wilson didn’t start the game strong. The Yellow Jackets focused their defense on him, forcing him to look for his teammates. However, this strategy ended up benefiting the Tar Heels.

“It started with Caleb,” said coach Hubert Davis. “I thought they would have to double the post if we threw the ball into Caleb. Instinctively, as soon as the ball touched his hands, he got it to the open teammate. That ignited everyone else on how to play.”

Once the Yellow Jackets eased off, Wilson took control of the game. He scored 14 points in the final 7:46 of the half, leading North Carolina to a 52-37 lead at halftime.

“I just had to figure out what’s going on,” Wilson said casually.

His most memorable moment came during a fast break after a missed shot by Georgia Tech. Kyan Evans launched the ball toward the basket, but it appeared too high for Wilson to reach. Not at all. He leaped and caught it with his right hand, slamming it through the hoop in a stunning display of his athleticism.

“I just jumped as high as I could,” Wilson explained. “I didn’t want it to be a turnover. I wanted to try to grab it and save it. So I grabbed the ball and just threw it in the hole.”

Wilson set two school freshman records, recording his 15th game with 20 points and extending his streak of double-figure points to 21 consecutive games to start his college career.

It seems unlikely that he will stay in Chapel Hill for long. The NBA is calling his name, and there’s even a possibility of a return to Atlanta.

He has already shown his ability to perform well in his hometown. A little over a month ago, during the CBS Sports Classic at the nearby State Farm Arena, the Tar Heels edged Ohio State 71-70, with Wilson scoring 20 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.

“I think for anybody, being able to come back home is a big deal,” Davis said. “He grew up with traffic about 25 minutes from here. One of the things that did help him today was he already played in Atlanta. … He played really well against Ohio State, but I think he came in more settled this time, the second time around.”

Wilson was thrilled to deliver another strong performance in Atlanta, with plenty of family and friends cheering him on.

“I know there are people looking out for me,” he said. “People who want to see me do well.”
