Gettysburg’s Comeback Victory in District 3 Class 3A Championship

Postseason wrestling is a test of endurance, strategy, and mental toughness. For the Gettysburg boys wrestling team, it was no different as they faced an uphill battle in the District 3 Class 3A team championship match against Wilson on Saturday at Central York High School.

The Warriors started the day with a significant deficit, trailing Wilson 22-3 after five bouts. However, their resilience and determination shone through as they mounted a remarkable comeback to claim their third consecutive district title with a final score of 37-33.

The Strategy Behind the Comeback

Head coach Chris Haines emphasized the importance of composure and adaptability during the match. “We knew what we had to do,” he said. “We had to shift from just winning matches to securing bonus points.”

This plan was communicated effectively to the wrestlers, who responded with precision and intensity. Isaiah Jackson, a key player for Gettysburg, highlighted the team’s focus. “Coach Haines told us we needed six from all of us, and I knew I was going out and getting six,” he said.

The Warriors executed their strategy flawlessly, winning the next five bouts from 133 pounds through 160 pounds via pin or technical fall. This surge gave them a 31-22 lead over Wilson.

Caden Shearer, returning from an undisclosed injury, played a pivotal role in clinching the victory. At 189 pounds, he pinned Matthew Wyatt in the first period, sealing the win and marking Gettysburg’s third straight D3 3A crown.

How the Match Unfolded

Wilson made strategic moves early in the lineup, including moving Abramm Schaffer from 150 pounds to 121 pounds. Schaffer’s quick pin of Landon Pitzer in 28 seconds set the tone for the Bulldogs. Combined with falls at 285 pounds by Shawn Harkless and Rhys Schaffer at 107 pounds, Wilson built a commanding lead.

The advantage grew to 22-3 when Isaac Eidle secured a major decision over Aiden Black at 127 pounds. Despite this, Gettysburg remained focused and began chipping away at the deficit.

Will Yordy (133) and Isaiah Jackson (139) closed the gap with back-to-back pins, bringing the score to 22-15. Myles Grossman (145) and Blake Haines (152) followed with technical falls, giving Gettysburg a 25-22 lead. Reid Grossman then added another pin at 160 pounds, pushing the score to 31-22.

Wilson fought back with a technical fall by McKaden Speece at 172 pounds, narrowing the gap to 31-27. However, Caden Shearer’s decisive pin at 189 pounds sealed the victory for Gettysburg.

Looking Ahead

Gettysburg (21-1) will host the winner of the preliminary dual between the District 12 runner-up and the District 7 runner-up in the first round of the PIAA Class 3A Team Championships on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Wilson (18-4) will face the District 1 champion in its first-round match.

The PIAA is expected to release brackets on Sunday, setting the stage for the next phase of the postseason.

In the third-place match, Central Dauphin overcame a six-point deficit in the final two bouts to defeat Palmyra 31-25. Jaden Moss (189) and Cole Ramberger (215) provided crucial pins, helping the Spartans secure the bronze medal.

Central Dauphin (19-3) will travel to the home of the District 11 champion for a preliminary match on Tuesday, while Palmyra (19-4) faces the District 7 champion in its own preliminary match.
