“I can safely say that the fans love him but fans always love players who score a lot of goals,” Slot said. “What I like about Hugo and also Florian is that the focus is on their goals and assists—football should be like this because it is a great game to watch, especially when they score goals—but their work-rate has improved so much.”

Wirtz’s performance has been impressive, and Slot believes he is just beginning to reach his potential. “I am very happy for him. He just showed to the world his quality. When asked about building consistency in the league, Slot said, “We have to take game after game. For me, we are always the best team on the pitch but we maybe concede too many goals or don’t score enough—but today we did very well and we have to take next game after next game.”

Wirtz shared his perspective on scoring goals. “I just enjoy the goals. As long as I can help the team win games, I am happy. When you celebrate your own goal it is always the best. I am just happy to play here in front of the fans.”
