If the Atlanta Falcons manage to defeat the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, the tiebreaker rules could shift the advantage to Carolina, potentially eliminating the Bucs from playoff contention for the first time since 2019.

Tampa Bay’s strategy relied heavily on its running game, which helped control the ball and limit the Panthers’ offensive opportunities throughout much of the game. However, a missed field goal by the Bucs with 5:12 remaining gave the Panthers a chance to regain momentum. Bryce Young connected with Tetairoa McMillan for a 40-yard gain, setting up a short touchdown pass with just 2:27 left on the clock.

Baker Mayfield completed 16 of 22 passes for 203 yards and one touchdown, while also scrambling for 31 yards, showcasing his versatility under pressure.

Late in the second quarter, the game was on the line as the Panthers cut the lead to 10-7 and moved into Tampa Bay territory. Rookie cornerback Jacob Parrish made a crucial play, intercepting a pass intended for McMillan for the second time this season. The Bucs capitalized on the turnover with a field goal, extending their lead to 13-7 at halftime.

In what may be the final game of his career at Raymond James Stadium, linebacker Lavonte David delivered a pivotal moment. During the fourth quarter, the Panthers were driving into Tampa Bay territory when they attempted a flea-flicker pass. Running back Rico Dowdle lost his footing while trying to lateral the ball back to Bryce Young, allowing David to recover the fumble and secure the ball for the Bucs.

Despite the win, the Bucs’ special teams continue to raise concerns. Place-kicker Chase McLaughlin has had an impressive season with long field goals but has now had kicks blocked in consecutive games. This inconsistency could prove costly if the team needs reliable scoring in high-pressure situations.

The Bucs have a history of clutch performances in the final weeks of the season. In previous years, they’ve often needed to win their last game to either clinch a playoff spot or stay in the race.
