Scottie Scheffler’s Dominant Start to the Season

LA QUINTA, Calif. — Scottie Scheffler began his season with a performance that seemed unchanged from previous years, showcasing his usual dominance on the golf course. On Sunday, he recorded four birdies over a six-hole stretch, securing a four-shot victory in The American Express and leaving 18-year-old Blades Brown and the rest of the field behind.

Scheffler closed the tournament with a 6-under 66, adding another win to his impressive record. This marks his 20th victory on the PGA Tour, all within the last four years. His latest triumph earned him a lifetime membership on the tour. What stands out even more is that nine of those 20 wins came by a margin of four shots or more, highlighting his consistent superiority in the game.

At just 29 years old, Scheffler has already secured 20 wins and four major championships. He joins an elite group of players, including Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, who have achieved this feat before turning 30.

“Pretty wild,” Scheffler said. “It’s been a great start to my career. It’s been special. I try not to think about that stuff too much. I was just trying to do the things I needed to do to be prepared.”

A New Challenger on the Scene

Blades Brown, the 18-year-old who recently graduated from high school, made history by playing eight consecutive days of PGA Tour-sanctioned events. He was the first player to do so, competing in a Korn Ferry Tour event in the Bahamas that ended just days before this tournament.

Brown’s journey was both exciting and challenging. He finished second in the tournament, but the pressure of being the youngest PGA Tour winner in 95 years may have affected his performance. He started the final round one shot behind leader Si Woo Kim and one shot ahead of Scheffler. However, by the fourth hole, Brown had fallen five shots behind, while Scheffler surged ahead.

On the par-3 fourth hole, Scheffler hit a precise 8-iron to within two feet for a birdie. Meanwhile, Brown faced trouble on the fifth hole, hitting his tee shot into the water and eventually making a double bogey. From that point on, Brown struggled, going 11 holes without a birdie and finishing with a 74, dropping from a tie for second to a tie for 18th.

“I got some things I got to sharpen up, and hopefully we see if we can do what Scottie’s doing,” Brown said.

Other Notable Performers

Jason Day delivered a strong finish, carding a 64 to climb 18 spots and secure a runner-up position alongside Ryan Gerard (65), Matt McCarty (68), and Andrew Putnam (68).

Si Woo Kim, who often plays with Scheffler at Royal Oaks in Dallas, also faced challenges during the tournament. After a strong start, he faltered on the par-5 eighth hole, taking two shots to escape a greenside bunker and ultimately making a double bogey. He missed a 3-foot par putt on the next hole but managed to recover with three birdies on the back nine, finishing with a 72 and tying for sixth.

Scheffler’s Unstoppable Momentum

Scheffler remained focused throughout the tournament, maintaining a four-shot lead heading into the 13th hole. His only significant misstep came on the par-3 17th hole, known as “Alcatraz,” where he hit a tee shot into the water. Despite this, he managed to keep his lead intact, thanks to his overall performance.

Scheffler now takes a week off before concluding the West Coast swing with three straight events. His journey began four years ago with the Phoenix Open, where he won his first PGA Tour title in a playoff. Since then, his performances have become increasingly dominant, with no close calls in recent tournaments.
