A Unique Motivation for Jessica Pegula

Jessica Pegula found an unusual way to push herself during her match against defending champion Madison Keys at the Australian Open. The sixth seed used the threat of having to wear a Taylor Swift-themed Kansas City Chiefs jersey as motivation, which ultimately helped her secure a spot in the quarter-finals.

Pegula defeated her close friend, Keys, with a score of 6-3, 6-4. In addition to advancing in the tournament, she also ensured that Keys would have to face a rather unappealing challenge: eating apple pie covered in melted cheddar cheese.

The two American players share a strong bond off the court, even co-hosting a podcast called “The Player’s Box.” Before their match on Rod Laver Arena, they made a bet that added some extra spice to their encounter. If Keys lost, she would have to eat the cheesy apple pie, while Pegula, who has a billionaire father owning the Buffalo Bills NFL franchise, had to wear a Chiefs’ shirt.

The rivalry between the Bills and the Chiefs is well-known, making the stakes of their wager even more interesting.

A Personal Touch to the Bet

Pegula explained the reasoning behind her choice of the bet. “My grandparents are Canadian, they have this tradition, my mum always did… they would melt cheddar cheese on their apple pie, so that was my bet for her,” she said.

She also revealed that Keys wanted her to wear a Travis Kelce/Taylor Swift-themed Chiefs’ jersey. “Honestly, I had a lot of motivation today not to wear that,” Pegula admitted.

Keys, on the other hand, was reluctant but willing to honor the bet. “A bet is a bet, so I’ll do it. I hope it’s less gross than I think it’s going to be, but we will find out, I guess,” she said.

Advancing in the Tournament

Pegula’s victory came with a reward beyond avoiding the Chiefs’ jersey. She now faces either fellow American and fourth seed Amanda Anisimova or China’s Wang Xinyu in the next round.

For Pegula, the win was significant as she continues her quest for an elusive Grand Slam title. Despite reaching the US Open final in 2024, she has yet to claim a major championship. She has made three consecutive quarter-final appearances at the Australian Open between 2021 and 2023, but the 31-year-old has never advanced further.

Her performance against Keys was impressive, as the defending champion struggled with consistency and composure. “I’ve been playing really well, seeing the ball, hitting the ball really well this whole tournament,” Pegula said. “And I wanted to kind of stay true to that, and then just lean on a couple things that I felt like she would do, and I felt like I came out kind of doing it pretty well.”

Dominating the Match

Pegula started the match strongly, winning her serve to love and creating two break points early on. She took a 2-0 lead and maintained control of the set by holding serve.

Keys eventually found her rhythm, holding serve and showcasing some classic shots, but she also made several errors, including a serve that almost hit the baseline and a poorly executed volley.

Despite a brief resurgence, Keys struggled with her serving, and the distractions of an air show over Melbourne Park during the match added to the tension. Three double faults on her opening serve gave Pegula the advantage again in the second set.

Ultimately, there was no way back for Keys as Pegula secured her place in the quarter-finals with a decisive performance.
