Latest loss deepens Jets’ dismal roster struggles in final clash vs. Bills
The New York Jets are set to face the Buffalo Bills in a regular season finale that could be described as a test of endurance rather than a competitive match. The game, scheduled for January 4 at Highmark Stadium, is expected to showcase a team with minimal depth and talent. This is particularly concerning given the Jets’ decision to start an underwhelming, undrafted rookie quarterback while having a seasoned professional like Tyrod Taylor on the roster.
This strategy has raised eyebrows among fans and analysts alike, especially considering the Jets’ apparent lack of commitment to winning this final game. The situation worsens with the news that their top running back, Breece Hall, will not be available due to a knee injury. Hall, who was poised to enter free agency, had been listed as questionable after limited practices throughout the week.
As a result, the Jets are forced to rely on less experienced players for key positions. Kene Nwangwu, a core special teamer, is expected to take the majority of the rushing carries, alongside Khalil Herbert, an in-season addition. This move highlights the Jets’ depleted roster and their struggle to field a competitive team for the final game of the season.

Jets’ QB
Brady Cook, the undrafted rookie quarterback, has struggled significantly in his first four appearances. He has been intercepted seven times and has been sacked 18 times in four losses. His performance has been far from what one would expect from an NFL quarterback, with a completion percentage below 60% and an abnormally high sack percentage. Cook’s abilities seem more aligned with UFL level talent rather than NFL prospects.

Jets’ RBs
With Breece Hall ruled out, the Jets are without their top three running backs. Braelon Allen is on season-ending Injured Reserve, and Isaiah Davis was also ruled out earlier in the week. This leaves Kene Nwangwu and Khalil Herbert as the primary options. Nwangwu did not carry the ball until Week 17 against the New England Patriots, rushing six times for 31 yards. Herbert has only 10 yards on four total carries this season for New York.

Jets’ WRs
The wide receiver position group is in dire straits, with Garrett Wilson on the shelf for almost two months and Josh Reynolds out even longer. This leaves a weak group of players, including AD Mitchell, John Metchie, Isaiah Williams, Tyler Johnson, and Arian Smith. Despite playing only seven games, Wilson still leads all Jets’ wide receivers with 395 yards. Mitchell, Metchie, and Williams have all been cut at some point this season. Tyrell Shavers, a backup for the Bills, would be the top wide receiver for the Jets.

Jets’ TEs
The tight end position is also struggling, with Mason Taylor missing his fourth straight game. This leaves Jeremy Ruckert and Stone Smartt as the primary options. Ruckert has been a disappointment, with 58 receptions and one touchdown over four seasons. His run blocking does not meet the standards of Jackson Hawes. Smartt has primarily been a TE3 during his NFL career, being targeted only nine times as a receiver this season, making seven catches for 52 yards.
The Jets’ lineup for this game is a clear indication of their current state. With multiple key players sidelined and a reliance on inexperienced or underperforming talent, it’s hard to see how they can compete effectively against the Bills. The Bills, on the other hand, are likely to rest some of their starters but should still dominate the Jets in this matchup.
