Utah found itself up against one of the top teams in the nation, No. 1 Arizona, on Saturday afternoon at the Huntsman Center. The Wildcats displayed their dominance from the start, taking control early and maintaining that lead throughout the game. This led to a decisive 97-78 victory for Arizona, which dropped Utah to 8-6 overall and 0-1 in Big 12 play.

Early Momentum from Steals and Rebounds

The game started with a quick lead from Utah when Don McHenry hit a jumper on the first possession. However, this was short-lived as Arizona quickly took control. Just 14 seconds later, Arizona scored, starting a run that saw them take the next 14 points. This momentum was fueled by steals and some early offensive rebounds, which helped the Wildcats maintain their lead for most of the game.

Arizona shot an impressive 61.1% in the first half, with three players scoring in double figures by halftime. They carried this performance into the second half, leading 58-39 at the break. Midway through the first half, Utah had one of its strongest stretches. After falling behind by 17 points in just eight minutes, the Utes responded with an 11-3 run. Over the following minutes, they managed to reduce their deficit to single digits. Each time Arizona answered, but Utah’s perseverance was evident.

Terrence Brown led the Utes with 26 points, six assists, and four rebounds. Don McHenry added 15 points, four rebounds, and two steals, while Keanu Dawes, the only Ute with Big 12 experience, contributed 15 points, nine rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and a steal.

Arizona’s Efficiency Secures the Win

Arizona’s efficiency was key to their victory. They averaged 1.36 points per possession and shot 53.6% for the game, securing their 14th straight win of the season. Several statistics highlighted Arizona’s dominance, including a 11-5 edge in steals, which translated to a 18-9 advantage in points off turnovers and a 15-6 edge in fastbreak points.

Arizona’s superior interior presence was also evident. They outrebounded Utah 43-30, including a 14-10 edge on the offensive glass. This led to a 15-11 advantage in second-chance points, further showcasing their dominance in the game.
