Louisville’s Return to Form

No. 23 Louisville welcomed back one of its most promising players, Mikel Brown Jr., this weekend. With a top-five challenge just around the corner, the timing couldn’t have been better for the Cardinals.

Brown, a five-star freshman, is set to lead the Cardinals against No. 5 Duke on Monday in a highly anticipated Atlantic Coast Conference showdown in Durham, N.C. His return comes after a significant absence due to back spasms that kept him out of action for six weeks and eight games.

Initially, Brown had an impressive start to his college career, but the injury forced him to sit out several games. Despite the setback, Louisville coach Pat Kelsey remained confident in Brown’s determination to return to the court. The program took a cautious approach to his recovery, gradually reintroducing him to game action.

On Saturday, Brown made a strong impact in an 85-71 home win over Virginia Tech. He recorded a team-high 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting, along with six assists. “He looked great and he played great,” Kelsey said. “You asked me, was I surprised? Nothing surprises me with that kid. Unbelievably talented, and he just played to exhaustion.”

Brown also made three of his six 3-point attempts, showcasing his shooting ability. He admitted that watching from the bench was difficult, as the Cardinals went 4-4 during the eight games he missed.

“I’ve had this stretch before, and it’s not fun, just because the game of basketball has given me so much and the love for the game, it’s just hard to sit down and watch, honestly,” Brown said. “We always talk about it, man, ‘Adversity’s gonna come, it’s gonna hit. It’s just, how are you gonna handle it?’ And we handled it well, and I handled it well.”

One of the games Brown missed was Louisville’s first matchup with Duke. In that game, the Blue Devils came from behind to secure an 84-73 road win on Jan. 6. They trailed by as many as 12 points but dominated the second half with a 46-26 advantage.

Duke (18-1, 7-0) has continued its winning streak, defeating Wake Forest 90-69 on Saturday. Freshman phenom Cameron Boozer led the way with 32 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and three steals. The Blue Devils outrebounded Wake Forest 43-22 and outscored them 48-16 in the paint.

Coach Jon Scheyer praised his team’s focus on fundamentals, stating, “I think for us, not to get bored with what’s working. That was our advantage in this game. It’s our advantage probably most games with how we’re trying to play. … If you think about the free throws and the points in the paint, that’s 69 points in the paint or at the foul line.”

Boozer has been a key contributor for Duke, averaging 23.7 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. Earlier this month, he scored 27 points (10-for-12 shooting), while Isaiah Evans added 23 and Caleb Foster had 20 in Duke’s win at Louisville. Ryan Conwell led the Cardinals with 24 points in that game.

Conwell (19.5 ppg) and Brown (16.9 ppg) are Louisville’s top scorers. Their performance will be crucial as the Cardinals prepare to face Duke in their upcoming match.
