For the first time in three seasons, the Texas Longhorns found themselves outside of the national championship conversation after finishing the regular season with a 9-3 record. This result meant they were not selected for the College Football Playoff, and their season came to an end with a win in the Citrus Bowl.

Last postseason, however, was a different story. In the first year of the expanded College Football Playoff, the Longhorns made a strong run, defeating the Clemson Tigers in the first round and the Arizona State Sun Devils in the Peach Bowl. Their journey ultimately ended in the Cotton Bowl against the Ohio State Buckeyes.

One of the most memorable games from that playoff run was the Peach Bowl matchup against Arizona State. The game turned into a thrilling back-and-forth contest, with the Longhorns securing a 39-31 victory in double overtime after the Sun Devils staged a dramatic comeback in the fourth quarter. A former Sun Devil is still reflecting on that loss over a year later.

Skattebo Continues to Talk Texas

On a recent episode of the Roommates Show, hosted by New York Knicks players Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart, former Arizona State running back and current New York Giants player Cam Skattebo once again discussed the loss to Texas in last season’s College Football Playoff.

“They had thrown the ball downfield on 4th and 13, dude drops the ball, never had possession of the ball, rolls over and puts it in his lap, and they called it a touchdown,” Skattebo said. “I hate making excuses, but there are some things that could have been changed, for sure, to take a win there.”

The play Skattebo is referring to occurred when Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers connected with wide receiver Matthew Golden in the back of the end zone on a 28-yard touchdown pass in the first overtime. This play tied the game, and just one play later, Ewers found tight end Gunnar Helm for a go-ahead touchdown. The game was ultimately sealed when safety Andrew Mukuba intercepted a pass.

Skattebo, who had a standout performance against one of the nation’s top defenses, nearly led the Sun Devils to victory. He finished the Peach Bowl with 30 carries for 143 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, and one passing touchdown.

This is not the first time Skattebo has spoken about the loss to the Longhorns. Earlier this summer, as he prepared for the 2025 NFL season, he appeared on the St. Brown Podcast hosted by Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and his brother, Equanimeous St. Brown.

During that appearance, Skattebo brought up Golden’s touchdown catch and the controversial no-call for targeting on a tackle by Texas safety Michael Taaffe late in the fourth quarter.

“Targeting, catch-no-catch in the end zone,” Skattebo said. “We review everything but that one. I don’t understand it.”
