How Collin Klein Led Wildcats to a Strong Start
K-State’s Path to a Big 12 Championship in 2026
This offseason, many college football players are entering the transfer portal, and several from the Kansas State Wildcats have done so. However, key players are also choosing to return, signaling a potential resurgence for the program.
One of the most significant developments is that K-State’s starting quarterback has confirmed his intention to return for the 2026 season. This decision eliminates one major concern for the program, as the team can now focus on building around its experienced signal-caller.
Avery Johnson, the Wildcats’ star dual-threat quarterback, is central to K-State’s hopes of returning to the winning ways they experienced in 2022 and 2023. Johnson led the team to a victory over NC State in the Pop-Tarts Bowl during the 2023 season, showcasing his ability to make big plays when it matters most.
Despite a disappointing 2025 season, where the team only managed six wins, K-State is looking to bounce back. Before this season, the Wildcats had won at least nine games in each of the previous two seasons and had won both of their bowl games. With Johnson leading the way, the team aims to reclaim its position as a contender in the Big 12 Conference.
Johnson’s decision to return was accompanied by a statement about “unfinished business,” which highlights his determination to lead the team to a conference title. His presence provides stability during a coaching change, as former Wildcat quarterback and current head coach Collin Klein will be working closely with him.
The “Klein-Johnson” connection is expected to be crucial for K-State’s success. Klein, who previously recruited Johnson to K-State while serving as the offensive coordinator, understands the player’s strengths and how to maximize his potential. This relationship could be the foundation for a strong offensive attack in the coming years.
In addition to Johnson, other key players have announced their return for the 2026 season. While some players have chosen to enter the transfer portal, the new coaching staff is focused on bringing in talent through the portal to strengthen the roster.
Defensive Identity and Strategic Additions
To maintain their defensive identity, K-State has appointed Jordan Peterson as the new defensive coordinator. Peterson comes from Texas A&M and brings experience in developing a tough-minded defense. The expectation is that the Wildcats will become one of the top defensive teams in the Big 12 under his leadership.
Another strategic move was the hiring of Marcus Woodson as co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. Woodson previously worked at Arkansas and is expected to improve the secondary and increase production from the defense.
The transfer portal is playing a critical role in bolstering the defense, particularly at defensive tackle and in the secondary. K-State is looking to add players who can help stop high-powered passing attacks from teams like Texas Tech and BYU.
Offensive Playmakers and Line Development
On the offensive side, K-State is also seeking to improve its receiving corps. Top receiver Jayce Brown and talented running back Dylan Edwards have entered the portal, but the team is looking for new “home run” threats.
Derrick Salley Jr., a junior college wide receiver known for his size (6’4″) and verticality, has been signed to immediately enhance the passing game. The addition of Thad Ward, who returns from Illinois as associate head coach/WR coach, is another positive step. Ward played a key role in developing one of the best receiving groups in school history during the 2022 Big 12 Championship season.
The offensive line remains a priority for K-State. George Fitzpatrick, a former Ohio State transfer, is expected to provide much-needed depth after missing the entire 2025 season due to injury. He is poised to be a starter and anchor for the offensive line in 2026.
Additionally, the 2026 recruiting class includes promising linemen such as Keegan Collins and Oliver Miller. These young players will be vital for the team’s strength in the Big 12, as they will need to quickly develop into reliable contributors.
Looking Ahead
With the transfer portal being a key component of the program’s strategy, K-State is taking proactive steps to build a competitive roster. While the offseason is still unfolding, the team is off to a strong start, and the future looks bright for the Wildcats.
As the program continues to evolve under Coach Klein, the combination of returning stars, strategic additions, and a renewed focus on fundamentals could set the stage for a successful 2026 season.
