New Beginnings for Texas A&M Softball

As the new year approaches, it brings with it a sense of renewal and fresh opportunities. This sentiment is particularly true for the Texas A&M softball program, which has undergone significant changes to its roster following key departures. Despite these transitions, the team remains focused on building upon the success achieved in the previous season.

“I can see the vision,” said head coach Trisha Ford. “I can see what we are building here and how we’re going to sustain greatness because I don’t want to just be good for one year. I want to be good every single year.”

Under Ford’s leadership, the Aggies have consistently ranked among the Top 25 in the nation for four consecutive years. The team started the last season at No. 7, rose to become the No. 1 team in the country, and secured the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.

2026 Season Overview

The upcoming season will feature a different lineup, but Ford and her coaching staff have worked diligently to fill the gaps created by departing players. By leveraging the transfer portal and retaining most of the returning athletes, the team aims to maintain its competitive edge.

In the pitching department, Emiley Kennedy and Emily Leavitt have graduated, but pitchers like Grace Sparks and Sydney Lessentine remain as crucial components of the squad. Other notable players who have left include Mac Barbara, Koko Wooley, Kramer Eschete, and Allie Enright. Additionally, Kylei Griffin and Amari Harper have entered the transfer portal.

“We’re going to be reloading, but I also feel like we’re going to compete,” Ford remarked. “I love the underdog mentality of like, ‘OK, you know, we’re 14, that’s fine, like, we’re just going to put our heads down and work.’ And so I think we’re in a good spot. I think we’re going to surprise some people, and I think we’re going to have some bumps this year, but I do think we have the pieces to be really competitive.”

Newcomers and Potential for Success

To address the voids created by departures, seven newcomers have joined the team, including three freshmen. These additions could potentially lead the program to the Women’s College World Series (WCWS) for the first time during Ford’s tenure with the Maroon and White.

Among the new arrivals are Oklahoma State transfers Tallen Edwards and Micaela Wark, Oklahoma transfer Maya Bland, and former five-star recruit Paislie Allen from Georgia. Additionally, Texas State transfer Harley Vestal, Taylor Pannell—who was the NCAA leader in saves—and Softball America’s Top 100 freshman Maddie Sauni have joined the Aggie squad.

This season, Texas A&M will face twelve teams ranked in the USA Softball Top 25, along with two other schools that received votes. The season will kick off on February 5 against ACU at 4:30 p.m., part of the Aggie Classic. Notably, No. 1 Texas Tech will be in attendance, providing A&M with its first-ranked test of the season.

Texas A&M has also made headlines in other sports. The football team is among the finalists for a 4-star wide receiver. Meanwhile, the volleyball team has achieved historic milestones, securing its first national title in program history. The team also received an extremely warm welcome home after advancing to the Final Four and made history with a massive upset win over Nebraska.
