Fernando Mendoza has etched his name into college football history by leading Indiana to an unprecedented 16-0 record and capturing the National Championship. As a quarterback, Mendoza showcased extraordinary performance throughout the season, completing 273 of 379 passes (72%) for 3,535 yards, 41 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He also added 276 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, making him a dual threat on the field.

From Humble Beginnings to Greatness

What makes Mendoza’s journey even more impressive is where he started. Coming out of Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, Fla., he was considered a two-star recruit by the 247Sports Composite, ranked No. 2,149 overall, No. 140 among quarterbacks, and No. 288 in Florida. His only Division I offers came from Cal, Yale, Florida International, Bryant, Lehigh, and Pennsylvania.

After two seasons as Cal’s starter, Mendoza became a highly sought-after player in the transfer portal. He ultimately chose Indiana after being convinced by coach Curt Cignetti’s development plan. Going into the 2025 season, Mendoza was ranked 24th in Heisman Trophy odds, according to ESPN. However, his performance throughout the regular season, including several late comeback drives and blowout victories, led to a fitting conclusion with a National Championship in his hometown against his hometown team, Miami.

A Game-Winning Moment

The victory was sealed by cornerback Jamari Sharpe’s interception, but Indiana might not have been in that position without Mendoza’s gritty touchdown run on 4th and 5 in the fourth quarter. This play will be remembered as one of the best runs in college football history.

“I know he’s great in interviews and comes off as the All-American guy, but he has the heart of a lion when it comes to competition,” said Cignetti postgame. “That guy competes like a warrior.”

Mendoza faced significant physical challenges during the game, with several roughing the quarterback calls going unflagged. “There should have been two roughing the quarterbacks and one high hit to the head that weren’t called,” Cignetti added. “Can’t say enough about his effort on that play and our team finding a way to get it done.”
