U.S. President Donald Trump made history last year when he became the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl. He was seen watching the Philadelphia Eagles defeat the Kansas City Chiefs with a score of 40-22 at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. His attendance was made possible through an invitation from Gayle Benson, the owner of the New Orleans Saints.

The event took place against the backdrop of heightened security measures due to the assassination attempt on Trump’s life in July 2024 in Pennsylvania. In preparation for his arrival, the Secret Service deployed several days before the Super Bowl to ensure all necessary safety protocols were in place.

“Extensive planning and coordination have been in place to ensure the safety of all attendees, players, and staff,” said Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Secret Service, in a statement to the Associated Press. “Security measures have been further enhanced this year, given that this will be the first time a sitting President of the United States will attend the event.”

Now, as the next Super Bowl approaches, fans are wondering if Trump will make another appearance. The upcoming game, known as Super Bowl LX, is scheduled for February 8 in Santa Clara, California, where the New England Patriots will face the winner of the Seattle Seahawks-Los Angeles Rams NFC Championship Game.

In an exclusive interview with the New York Post, Trump confirmed he will not be attending this year’s Super Bowl. “It’s just too far away,” he said. “I would. I’ve [gotten] great hands [at] the Super Bowl. They like me. I would go if, you know, it was a little bit shorter.”

The distance between Washington, D.C., and California spans over 2,800 miles, requiring a flight of approximately 6 to 7 hours. Additionally, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the NFL’s choice of halftime performer, Bad Bunny, and opening ceremony performer, Green Day. Both artists have been vocal critics of Trump in the past.

“I’m anti-them,” Trump stated. “I think it’s a terrible choice. All it does is sow hatred. Terrible.”

Trump Caused Controversy at Super Bowl LIX

As always, Trump’s presence at the Super Bowl stirred up controversy. One notable incident involved pop star Taylor Swift, who was the fiancée of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and attended the game to support him. Swift faced heavy booing from Eagles fans when she appeared on the Jumbotron, an experience Trump seemed to enjoy.

“The only one that had a tougher night than the Kansas City Chiefs was Taylor Swift,” Trump wrote on Truth Social after the game. “She got BOOED out of the Stadium. MAGA is very unforgiving!”

Trump didn’t stop there. During the Eagles’ visit to the White House, he took the opportunity to mock Swift and the Chiefs again.

“I was there, I watched in person,” Trump proudly stated. “I was there along with Taylor Swift. How did that work out? How did that one work out?”

His presence also reportedly influenced Swift’s seating arrangements. It was reported that she did not sit with Brittany Mahomes, the wife of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Brittany has previously supported Trump, and those close to her advised her to avoid being seen with Swift while Trump was in attendance.
