A Historic Season for the Miami Hurricanes

The Miami Hurricanes had a season filled with highs and lows, but ultimately fell short of their goal of securing a sixth national championship. This was their first chance in 24 years to add another title to their legacy, but they were unable to overcome the Indiana Hoosiers in the final game of the season.

Top-ranked Indiana claimed its first-ever football national title with a 27-21 victory over the No. 10 Hurricanes on Monday night at Hard Rock Stadium. The game drew an announced crowd of 67,227 fans, who witnessed a historic moment in college football history.

Indiana finished the season undefeated with a record of 16-0, while Miami’s season came to an end with a 13-3 record. The Hurricanes had hoped to use their size to dominate both lines of scrimmage, but instead, they found themselves trailing 10-0 at halftime due to a lack of offensive production.

Miami managed only 69 total yards in the first half, went 0 for 6 on third down, and had a missed 50-yard field goal attempt as their only real scoring chance. Meanwhile, Indiana managed to score on two of its first five drives, aided by a few key penalties from Miami that kept the Hoosiers’ drives alive.

Despite a stronger second-half performance, Miami couldn’t overcome the deficit. Mark Fletcher Jr. scored a 57-yard run to cut the lead to 10-7, but Indiana responded with a touchdown after a blocked punt. Fletcher added another touchdown in the fourth quarter, bringing the score to 17-14. Mendoza led a crucial 12-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a touchdown run, giving Miami a chance to tie the game.

Malachi Toney, the freshman wide receiver, made two impressive plays, including a 41-yard catch-and-run and a 22-yard touchdown on a shovel pass, which brought the score to 24-21. However, Indiana kicked a field goal with just 1:42 left to extend their lead to six points. Miami’s final drive ended with an interception by Indiana cornerback Jamari Sharpe, sealing the loss.

Key Moments and Players

Malachi Toney proved to be a standout player throughout the season. He reclassified to graduate from Plantation American Heritage a year early and joined Miami for the 2025 season. His impact was immediate, as he became the ACC’s Rookie of the Year and the Football Writer Association of America’s national Offensive Freshman of the Year. Toney caught 109 passes for 1,211 yards and 10 touchdowns, including 10 catches for 122 yards and a touchdown in the championship game.

Another key addition to the team was quarterback Carson Beck, who transferred to Miami after initially declaring for the NFL Draft. Beck’s decision to transfer provided a spark for the Hurricanes, and despite missing spring practice due to a surgically-repaired elbow, he quickly earned the respect of his teammates and coaches. Beck finished the season with 19 of 32 completions for 232 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

Coaching Changes and Defensive Improvements

Miami made several strategic moves to strengthen its defense under new defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman. The hiring of Hetherman was seen as one of coach Mario Cristobal’s biggest moves. Alongside Hetherman, several players joined the team via the transfer portal, including defensive backs Keionte Scott, Jakobe Thomas, Ethan O’Connor, Xavier Lucas, and Zechariah Poyser; linebacker Mohamed Toure; and defensive lineman David Blay. These additions helped improve communication and physicality on the defensive side of the ball.

Miami’s season was a rollercoaster ride filled with ups and downs. They started strong with a 27-24 win over then-No. 6 Notre Dame in the season opener, which proved pivotal in their playoff hopes. The Hurricanes continued their momentum with wins over Florida State and other ACC teams, reaching No. 2 in the AP top-25 rankings.

However, the season wasn’t without its challenges. Miami faced setbacks, including a 24-21 home loss to Louisville and a 26-20 overtime loss to SMU. Despite these obstacles, the team showed resilience, winning three consecutive games to set up a crucial regular-season finale against Pittsburgh.

Playoff Run and Final Game

Miami’s journey through the playoffs was nothing short of remarkable. They defeated No. 7 Texas A&M in the first round, followed by a 24-14 win over No. 2 Ohio State in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, they beat Ole Miss to reach the final. However, the Hurricanes fell just short of their ultimate goal, coming one game away from a national championship.
