President Donald Trump made a notable appearance at the College Football Playoff National Championship Game on Monday, which took place at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. The event featured the Miami Hurricanes competing against the Indiana Hoosiers, with Trump in attendance alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Rubio, a native of Miami and former U.S. Senator from Florida, is also an alumnus of the University of Miami School of Law.

During the national anthem, cameras captured Trump acknowledging the crowd with a small wave as his image was shown on the stadium’s large video boards. This moment came after Pat McAfee had expressed concerns about the President attending the game. While the spectators generally reacted positively, the crowd seemed to lean slightly toward supporting Indiana over the local team, the Hurricanes.

The Hoosiers have been known for their strong fan support throughout their successful postseason journey, and this trend continued even though they were playing on Miami’s home ground. The presence of Trump at such a high-profile event required additional security measures. Despite the added hassle and cost associated with his attendance at sporting events, Trump has made appearances at numerous games since the start of his second term. One of his most memorable appearances was at last summer’s FIFA Club World Cup final held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. After Chelsea won the tournament, Trump inserted himself into the trophy ceremony and appeared to take home a winner’s medal. His attendance at the U.S. Open tennis championship in New York also led to complications, as heightened security measures caused delays in the match between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

Several hours before the game, the White House issued a statement congratulating both Indiana and Miami for reaching the CFP National Championship. The message highlighted the significance of college football as a cherished American tradition.
