While the attention has largely centered on the 2025 Draft class, the Nets’ youth movement extends beyond them. Noah Clowney, who was drafted two summers ago, is also under a rookie contract and will be eligible for an extension this summer. His recent performance, including a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds, has shown significant growth.

Noah Clowney’s Progress

Clowney, who turned 21 this season, has made a noticeable impact on the court. Through 39 games, he’s averaging career-highs in points (13.3), rebounds (4.1), and free throw attempts (4.0). His contributions have not only improved his stats but also positively affected the team’s performance, with the Nets outscoring opponents by 9.3 points per 100 possessions when he’s on the floor.

Clowney’s development has been evident both statistically and visually. He has transitioned from being primarily a shooter to actively attacking defenders, showcasing a more well-rounded game. Additionally, he has added muscle, which has contributed to his overall improvement.

Contract Extension Possibilities

With his current contract set to expire in the summer of 2027, Clowney is eligible to sign a multi-year extension this July. As a restricted free agent, the Nets can match any offer he receives. Given his performance, several teams are expected to show interest, including the San Antonio Spurs. A potential offer could be around $50 million over four years, averaging $12.5 million annually.

Despite his offensive improvements, some league insiders believe that Clowney’s defensive capabilities might affect his market value. However, the Spurs, who have Victor Wembenyama behind him, may find his skills appealing. The Spurs are currently one of the surprise teams in the Western Conference, tied for the third-best record at 28-13.

The Spurs’ Potential Interest

The Spurs have a need at the position Clowney plays, with Harrison Barnes starting every game at the four this season. Barnes is averaging his lowest points per game in over a decade, and the team is looking to strengthen their rotation. ESPN’s Kevin Pelton has highlighted Jeremy Sochan as a player to watch during the trade deadline, indicating potential moves in the future.

The Nets’ Approach to Extensions

Historically, the Nets have been proactive in negotiating extensions for their young players. They signed Nic Claxton and Cam Johnson well before the deadline, with contracts front-loaded. In the case of Day’ron Sharpe, they were able to secure a favorable deal due to limited cap space.

If Michael Porter Jr. remains with the Nets after the trade deadline and draft, he too will be eligible for an extension in the 2027-28 season. While the maximum contract for such an extension could be up to four years and $243 million, it is unlikely to complicate the negotiations for Clowney at this stage.
