LUBBOCK – The Texas Tech men’s basketball team delivered a standout performance in a high-stakes Big 12 matchup on a chilly Saturday night. The No. 15-ranked Red Raiders secured a hard-fought 84-71 victory over the No. 11-ranked BYU, fueled by a strong finish and a resilient effort from the entire squad.

The game took place in front of a packed crowd at United Supermarkets Arena, where the energy was palpable throughout the night. This win marked a significant moment for the Red Raiders, who had to overcome a substantial deficit to come out on top.

With 9:25 remaining in the game, the Red Raiders found themselves trailing 61-52 against a team that many expected to contend for the league title. However, this season has shown that the Red Raiders are up to the challenge. Their ability to make a comeback after such a large deficit is a testament to their growth and determination.

Coach McCasland’s Perspective

Texas Tech head coach Grant McCasland praised his team’s commitment and resilience. He noted that early in the season, the team relied heavily on offense to carry them through games. However, recent performances have demonstrated a shift in focus toward defense.

“I go back to the Illinois game (an 81-77 loss) where we could not guard, we could not get a stop,” McCasland said. “I think our guys have really made a commitment from that time, and now they’re seeing the grit that you have to have to finish things. It’s all about how you compete.”

McCasland highlighted the importance of defensive stops, especially during crucial moments in the game. His team’s ability to play solid defense in the final 10 minutes was a key factor in their victory.

“Our guys believed we were going to win the game, but we had to do it the defensive way,” he added. “The last 10 minutes of the game we thought we played the best defense we’ve played this year. For as many minutes as our guys played, the grit that we showed down the stretch, it says a ton of the compete level of JT Toppin, Christian Anderson and how it just oozes all over the rest of those guys. We’re believing, man. We’re believing we can win and no matter what it takes.”

Leadership and Defense

JT Toppin, the team’s standout player, played a pivotal role in the victory. He led the Red Raiders with 27 points and 12 rebounds, marking his seventh consecutive double-double of the season. However, it was Toppin’s defensive efforts and leadership that truly stood out to McCasland.

“The thing that added to this is that JT is not only working, but now he’s fighting for us to be great defensively,” McCasland said. “That to me is where our team is making the biggest jump. I just love the way JT Toppin and Christian Anderson compete like they did defensively down the stretch.”

Christian Anderson contributed 22 points and seven assists, while LeJuan Watts was instrumental in the second-half charge, finishing with 20 points and eight rebounds.

Controlling the Opposition

One of the most critical aspects of the game was limiting the impact of BYU’s freshman phenom, AJ Dybantsa. The Red Raiders managed to hold him to just 13 points, well below his season average of around 23 points.

Coach McCasland credited senior guard Donovan Atwell for his consistent defensive efforts against Dybantsa. “Don’s been our most consistent defender and I don’t think it’s close,” he said. “From the first day of practice until now, Donovan Atwell has been the guy who’s been showing up every day, every game trying to guard the team’s best player.”

Dybantsa was held to just two points in the second half, which significantly impacted the Cougars’ overall performance. Robert Wright III led BYU with 28 points, and Richie Saunders added 18, but the team struggled to keep up with the Red Raiders’ offensive and defensive intensity.

Looking Ahead

While this victory is a significant milestone for the Red Raiders, the team knows they must remain focused. They will face BYU again later in the season, and McCasland emphasized the importance of staying humble and continuing to work hard.

“Tech next travels to face an always-tough Baylor team at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Waco,” he said. “There’s no rest in the Big 12, especially on the road.”
