A Thrilling Overtime Showdown

Saturday’s men’s basketball matchup between Northwood and Lake Erie was a showcase of high-scoring action and intense competition. The game lived up to its reputation as one of the most exciting in the GMAC, delivering a back-and-forth battle filled with incredible shot-making and constant lead changes.

The Timberwolves narrowly defeated the visiting Storm 100-96 in overtime, much to the delight of a large crowd at Riepma Arena. This victory improved Northwood’s overall record to 11-6 and their conference standing to 6-4, while Lake Erie fell to 11-6 and 5-4 in the GMAC.

Northwood coach Tom Church praised the game, calling it “a really, really good college basketball game.” He added that if fans had to choose one game to watch on the GMAC schedule, this would be the one.

Overcoming the Storm’s Shooting Prowess

To secure the win, the Timberwolves had to overcome the Storm’s impressive 3-point shooting. Lake Erie made 44% of their three-point attempts (19 of 43), including Gavin Welch’s 8 of 9 from long range.

Church highlighted the Storm’s recent success, noting they had won four of their last five conference games. However, he emphasized that his team’s ability to handle pressure and rebound the ball was key to their victory.

“Their ability to hit 19 threes and for us to still find a way to win is something I’m extremely proud of,” Church said.

A Game Full of Runs and Momentum Shifts

Lake Erie started strong, building an early 15-7 lead. Northwood responded with an 8-2 run, including a 3-pointer by Andrew Smith, a driving layup by Jamonte Smith, and a 3-pointer by Jamison Eklund, cutting the deficit to 17-15.

The Storm then went on a 9-2 run to take a 35-27 lead, but the Timberwolves answered with a 14-point run that included a driving layup by Will Young, a 3-point play by Eklund, a layup and a 3-pointer by John Simpson, a steal and layup by Jamonte Smith, and a backdoor layup by Jamonte Smith. This gave Northwood a 41-35 lead at halftime.

The second half was a wild seesaw affair, with both teams trading leads multiple times. Lake Erie shot 53% from 3-point range and made 10 triples, while Northwood shot 50% from the floor and went 15 of 19 from the foul line.

Overtime Drama and Key Performances

With the score tied at 88-88, Will Young hit two free throws with 11 seconds left to give Northwood a 90-88 lead. Lake Erie’s Jake Leibacher responded with two free throws of his own with six seconds remaining, tying the game and sending it to overtime.

Church praised his team’s resolve during the extra period, noting that they were focused and determined. “Instead of being discouraged, they were like, ‘We’re going to win this game,'” he said.

John Sweeney provided the go-ahead basket in overtime, giving the Timberwolves a 92-90 lead. Northwood maintained a small lead throughout the extra period before extending it to 98-93 on a pair of free throws by Brayden Szamrej with 15 seconds left.

Amari Williams’ 3-pointer cut the lead to 98-96 with nine seconds to go, but Szamrej sealed the win with two more free throws in the closing seconds.

Star Players and Team Effort

Sweeney played a crucial role in the victory, leading the team with seven points and a game-high 14 rebounds. His ability to control the paint and alter shots was instrumental in the win.

Will Young led the Timberwolves with a game-high 30 points and six rebounds, while Jamison Eklund contributed 19 points. Brayden Szamrej added 13 points, five assists, and four steals, and John Simpson scored nine points with six rebounds.

On the other side, Lake Erie’s Gavin Welch led the team with 24 points, while Amari Williams added 21 points and Gio Moore contributed 12 points.

Looking Ahead

Northwood will face Cedarville on Thursday and Ohio Dominican on Saturday. Coach Church emphasized the importance of the upcoming road games, noting that the team has been working to get healthy and prepare for the challenges ahead.

“This is a pivotal point in the year,” Church said. “I think we can look back at this game down the road and see that it could be a catapult for the rest of the season.”

He also highlighted the urgency and determination of his players, stating, “We’ve got to find a way to go on the road and get a win now.”
