Chicago Blackhawks Continue Winning Streak

The Chicago Blackhawks are on a winning streak, showing strong performance in their recent games. In a recent road game, they defeated the Washington Capitals 3-2 in a shootout. This win marks their third consecutive victory and brings their record to 3-1-1 since the Christmas break. Out of the five games played during this period, three have gone into overtime or shootouts.

The Blackhawks started the game with an early lead thanks to Ryan Donato. Teuvo Teravainen continued his impressive run by scoring for the third straight game. His second-period power-play goal was the team’s third in the last two games. The game went into overtime after the Capitals tied the score midway through the third period. The Blackhawks managed to score on three of their six shootout attempts, with Nick Lardis and Andre Burakovsky converting before Nick Foligno secured the win.

“We’ve started to balance ourselves again, realize how we need to play and get to that identity,” Foligno said. “These are hard-fought wins. We knew that we’re not going to outscore teams by seven without those two guys in the lineup. But we have enough skill.”

Ilya Mikheyev Shines Offensively

Ilya Mikheyev is known for his defensive skills, but he has started to show offensive prowess when the team needs it most. After scoring two goals against the Dallas Stars on Thursday, he contributed to the Blackhawks’ first goal of the game. He beat Trevor van Riemsdyk to a puck behind the net and used a screen by Louis Crevier to create space above the circle. Donato capitalized on the opportunity to score his 10th goal of the season.

Later in the period, Mikheyev set up another scoring chance for Donato by winning a board battle behind the net. Unfortunately, Donato couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity. Mikheyev also had a 2-on-1 chance early in the second period but was denied by Logan Thompson.

Mikheyev, Donato, and Jason Dickson’s line had the second-most 5-on-5 ice time with 13:42. They had a 51.85 Corsi for percentage (CF%) and outscored the Caps 1-0. Head coach Jeff Blashill has been emphasizing a simple north-south game, and this line exemplifies that strategy.

Top Line Makes an Impact

Tyler Bertuzzi has been a consistent performer for the Blackhawks throughout the season. His best work has often come on the road, and this game was no different. He was active in the first period, getting involved in the forecheck and in front of the net. He added another road power-play point by setting up Teravainen’s goal. Few players could have made such a precise pass through the traffic.

The Bertuzzi, Ryan Greene, and Andre Burakovsky line was exceptional. They had a team-high 59.39 CF%, 11 shots on goal, 19 shot attempts, eight scoring chances, and four high-danger scoring chances. Half of the scoring chances were created by Greene, who continues to find ways to get open around the net. While he hasn’t been finishing the chances yet, his ability to create opportunities will likely lead to more points.

Nuggets & Tidbits

Coach Jeff Blashill discussed how the Blackhawks have developed a new offensive identity without Connor Bedard and Frank Nazar. The last two games, especially tonight, showcased this evolution. The team has shown more sustained offensive shifts due to better zone entries. They average just over 52 shot attempts per game, with 55 against the Dallas Stars and 61 against the Capitals.

Spencer Knight had another outstanding performance, making 32 saves, including 13 in the third period, for his 12th win of the season. He was particularly strong during the Capitals’ lone power play late in the third period. With the game tied 2-2, he made four crucial stops to keep the game even. Washington had six scoring chances during those two minutes, and Knight was especially effective with his pads, making multiple saves with his legs moving left and right.

Tom Wilson had a tough night as a Capitals forward. In the first period, he received a stick to a sensitive area from Louis Crevier. Later, he fell victim to a hit by Connor Murphy, causing his right leg to fold underneath him. He needed assistance returning to the locker room and did not return to the game. It will be interesting to monitor his status now that he has been named to Canada’s Olympic roster. If the injury is severe, Sam Bennett may replace him.

Crevier had a much better game after struggling against Dallas. He had two shots on goal, six shot attempts, two hits, a takeaway, and a blocked shot. He even got a chance in the shootout, nearly scoring with a shot that went just over the crossbar.

On Thursday, the Blackhawks had a shootout competition with Make-A-Wish kids, and both Crevier and Foligno scored. Blashill joked about using them in a game and did so at the first opportunity. Foligno was excited when his number was called, saying he felt like a kid again.

The Blackhawks are now 15-6-3 when scoring first this season.
