Houston Rockets’ Struggles in the Loss to Dallas Mavericks

The Houston Rockets faced a tough loss against the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday, and it didn’t take long for head coach Ime Udoka to identify the main issues. While several factors contributed to the defeat, the primary problems were clearly visible in the box score.

Alperen Şengün’s early exit due to a sprained right ankle was not the main cause of the loss. Similarly, Anthony Davis’ performance, with 26 points and 11 rebounds, wasn’t the deciding factor either. Instead, the Rockets’ shooting efficiency and defensive lapses were the key issues.

Houston took 106 shots but made only 41, including just 10 from three-point range. Their defense also struggled, allowing the Mavericks 21 fast-break points. Kevin Durant, who was the only Rocket to shoot over 50% from the field, noted that the team’s usual style of play wasn’t reflected in this game.

“We got a lot of shots up. I think we shot maybe 20 more than them. And we just got to knock them down,” said Durant, who scored 34 points on 14-of-26 shooting. “We can give them credit for making their shots, but we just didn’t make ours. It wasn’t for lack of effort that we lost this game.”

Game Highlights

Houston’s struggles were evident throughout the game. After leading by as many as 11 points in the first quarter, the Rockets missed two of their first 16 shots in the second quarter. The list of missed opportunities included Reed Sheppard from 3-point range and in the lane, Aaron Holiday from 12 feet, Jabari Smith Jr. from 3-point range and 9 feet, and Jae’Sean Tate from 3-point range.

Despite trying multiple lineups, the Rockets couldn’t find a rhythm. Udoka used seven different combinations in the second quarter and five more in the third, but it didn’t seem to matter. The Mavericks eventually built a 17-point lead, and while Houston managed to cut it to eight points with four minutes left, they couldn’t close the gap.

Defensive Struggles

One of the main issues for the Rockets was their transition defense. Udoka pointed out that the team wasn’t communicating effectively, which led to 21 fast-break points for the Mavericks. The Rockets had 17 offensive rebounds, but they allowed Dallas just two, highlighting their inability to control the boards.

Despite the loss, Udoka emphasized that the team wasn’t lacking effort. “We had some different lineups, tried to go small, scrambling and fighting,” he said.

Final Thoughts

This loss adds to a growing list of frustrating defeats for the Rockets, including overtime losses to teams with limited win totals. With a new season ahead, the team will need to address these issues if they hope to improve their performance.
