Liverpool and Barcelona Compete for Alessandro Bastoni

Liverpool is reportedly eyeing a move for Alessandro Bastoni, seeing him as a potential long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk. However, the Italian defender has also attracted interest from Barcelona, creating a competitive situation in the transfer market.

Van Dijk, one of the top defenders in the world, is 34 years old and currently under contract with Liverpool until the summer of 2027. While he remains a key player for the team when fit, there is an understanding among Liverpool’s management that he will eventually need to be replaced. This has led to speculation about who could take his place in the future.

A Dream Successor for Van Dijk

According to Graeme Bailey, a well-known transfer insider at TEAMtalk, Liverpool has identified Bastoni as the ideal candidate to follow in Van Dijk’s footsteps. Bailey highlighted that the Reds view Bastoni as “a dream successor for Virgil van Dijk.” A source mentioned that while Bastoni is happy at Inter Milan, there is a belief that he might consider moving abroad in the future.

Bastoni has had a successful career with Inter Milan, winning Serie A twice and being named the best defender in the league for the 2024/25 and 2023/24 seasons. His performances have drawn attention from several top clubs, including Liverpool and Barcelona.

Barcelona Enters the Race

Barcelona has also shown interest in signing Bastoni, according to Matteo Moretto, a respected journalist in Spanish sports publication Marca. The Catalan club has entered the race for the 26-year-old Italy international defender. Like Liverpool, Barcelona is looking for a new defender in 2026, but they have not yet initiated formal talks with Inter Milan over Bastoni.

The transfer fee for Bastoni is estimated to be between €70 million and €80 million (up to £70m, $94m). Whether Barcelona can afford the move depends on their financial situation.

Contract Talks with Inter Milan

Bastoni is currently in discussions with Inter Milan regarding a new contract. He is under contract with the Italian giants until the summer of 2028. FC Inter News reported that Bastoni is “deeply attached” to Inter, having been with the club since 2017 and expressing a desire to stay.

Despite interest from other clubs, such as Chelsea, it seems that Bastoni is not eager to leave Inter. On December 18, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano shared Bastoni’s response on X when asked about Barcelona’s interest: “It makes me proud to see links, it means I’m doing well – but there’s zero, nothing. I’m happy here at Inter, and I have zero issues or problems here. I don’t even focus on the news.”

Additional Transfer Developments

Inter Milan is reportedly in talks to sign a defender that Barcelona is monitoring. Meanwhile, Barcelona is also in advanced talks to acquire an attacking player.

In another development, sources have indicated that Marcus Rashford may not end up at Barcelona next season. The England international forward is currently on loan from Manchester United.

These ongoing developments highlight the dynamic nature of the transfer market, with multiple clubs vying for top talent and shaping their strategies for the future.
