The Rise of a Coaching Legend

Steve Kerr’s journey in the NBA has been nothing short of remarkable. As a player, he played a supporting role for 15 years, but as a coach, he has taken center stage with the Golden State Warriors, achieving considerable success. This success, according to Kerr, is largely due to the great talent he has had the privilege of working with.

Kerr transitioned into coaching in 2014 when he was hired by the Warriors to replace Mark Jackson as their head coach. Before this, he had worked as a commentator for TNT after retiring from playing in 2003 and also served as the general manager of the Phoenix Suns for a time.

As the head coach of the Warriors, Kerr has become the franchise’s most successful coach, winning four NBA titles and still aiming for more. Throughout his tenure, he has worked with some of the greatest players in the game, including Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and Kevin Durant.

Grateful for the Opportunity

In an interview on the “Tom Tolbert Show,” Kerr reflected on his coaching journey, expressing gratitude for being placed in a position to succeed by the Warriors. He emphasized that having great talent is essential for a coach to be elevated and celebrated.

“You know, name a sport, name a coach. The only way that the coach has really become elevated and celebrated is through great talent. And so it makes you wonder how many great coaches there have been who just didn’t ever get, you know, great talent, didn’t have the horses to get there. And I’m sure there are plenty of them,” Kerr said.

He shared a personal story about his former coach, Cotton Fitzsimmons, from his rookie year with the Suns. Although Fitzsimmons was a great coach, he never won a title because he lacked the necessary pieces to build a championship team.

“I still remember when I played for Cotton Fitzsimmons, my rookie year and the Suns that year won, I think 57 games and made the conference finals. And one of his messages to the team was, ‘I’m loving coaching you guys because I’ve never had the horses before, but now I got them.’ And he was right. He mostly coached bad teams. And that’s why he’s not as celebrated as, you know, the guys who won a lot of titles,” Kerr recalled.

Creating a Culture of Value

Beyond having great talent, Kerr credits his coaching success to the culture of feeling valued that he and the Warriors’ management have cultivated. This culture brings out the best in their players by making them feel important, engaging them in the process, and working together to achieve success.

The results of this approach are evident: eight playoff appearances out of 11 seasons under Kerr, six Finals appearances, and four championships.

“That’s what I really pride myself on with the Warriors. I think everybody who comes through here feels an environment that is comfortable but also challenging and that guys enjoy and they know that we’re, you know, helping them get better and trying to help them have great careers and so I just think it’s the vibe,” he said.

Navigating a Challenging Season

Despite the challenges, Kerr’s coaching abilities are being tested as the Warriors navigate what is shaping up to be a difficult season. They have struggled in the Western Conference and appear to be a Play-In team.

The Warriors are led by a veteran core of Curry, Green, and Jimmy Butler. However, their lack of size and inconsistent roster have hindered their ability to produce consistent wins. Additionally, there is uncertainty surrounding the future of Jonathan Kuminga with the team.

Although Kerr and the Warriors may be facing difficulties at the moment, he is managing to keep things together with the pieces he has, providing a foundation to build upon as the season continues.

Kerr remains focused on the future, determined to continue building a winning culture within the organization. His experience, combined with the talent and support around him, ensures that the Warriors remain a formidable force in the league.
